Clarity Grading: Pink Sapphire clarity grades are assigned when a trained, experienced gemologist examines the gem "face-up" under controlled lighting without magnification. . Sapphire clarity grades are assigned without magnification. Sapphire clarity grades are determined by an inclusion's visibility, or lack of visibility, to the naked eye.. This is the procedure at the major Gem Labs. . This is in sharp contrast to diamond grading where 10X magnification is required. The top sapphire clarity grade at American Gemological Laboratory is "Free of Inclusion" . and the top sapphire clarity grade at Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences is "Flawless". . According to the Gemological Institute of America's Revised Colored Stone Grading Lab Manual, . the top clarity grade for sapphire is "Eye clean". . These grades are assigned when an experienced, fully-trained gem-grader is unable to see any inclusions under ideal lighting conditions and without magnification. . When examined under magnification, almost all sapphires show some natural inclusions, regardless. of whether these inclusions are visible to the naked eye. So, a sapphire that is honestly graded . "Flawless" or "Free of Inclusion" or "Eye-clean" almost certainly contains inclusions at some level of. magnification. (As do most Flawless diamonds!). 10X is the basis for diamond clarity grading. Naked-eye is the basis for sapphire clarity grading. Diamonds and sapphires almost always show natural inclusions if the magnification is high enough.
